What is a home study and is it required?

In a stepparent adoption, a home study is just an interview — someone confirms you understand you will be the child's parent as if the child were born to you. It is NOT the invasive home inspection associated with foster care adoption. About half of states allow the home study to be waived for stepparent adoptions, and we include waiver documents when available. When required, cost is typically $300-$400.
