Follow the adoption court's appearance and finalization instructions. Required attendance, a possible waiver and remote participation depend on the proceeding and court. Do not assume every hearing is virtual or that every adult adoption requires a ceremonial appearance.
Confirm who must participate
Ask which petitioners, adoptees and other parties must attend, and whether original records or signed documents are required. Minor and adult proceedings can have different rules. A required consent does not always mean the signer must appear at every stage, but the authorized signing or waiver procedure must still be followed.
Different adult-adoption examples
Texas section 162.505 addresses personal attendance and permits a written good-cause waiver when a petitioner or adult adoptee is unable to attend. New York section 115 addresses examination and circumstances for dispensing with personal appearance.
Oregon ORS 109.329 permits the court to hold an adult-adoption hearing or take testimony and includes other review powers. It does not require treating every adult proceeding as an automatic final hearing with no substantive review.
Prepare for the actual court questions
Review the petition and supporting records. Be ready to explain the relationship, the required consents and notice, and the legal responsibilities involved. Answer accurately if the judge asks about unresolved issues or discrepancies. The judge decides whether the necessary findings are satisfied.
If travel is difficult
Ask early about remote appearance, disability accommodations or an applicable waiver. Do not simply miss a hearing because a website said attendance was optional. Read requesting an accommodation.
