Yes — after the adoption is finalized, you request a new birth certificate from your state's vital records office. The new birth certificate will list the adoptive stepparent as the legal parent, as if they were the birth parent from the beginning. If you chose to change the child's name as part of the adoption, the new name will also appear on the new certificate. The original birth certificate is sealed by court order.
