StepParent Adoption 360

What counts as abandonment for stepparent adoption?

Abandonment means the biological parent has not maintained a meaningful parental relationship with the child for a specific period (varies by state, typically 6-12 months). Important: token contact like an occasional phone call or one brief visit does NOT count as meaningful contact. And paying child support does NOT negate abandonment — abandonment is about the relationship with the child, not financial payments.
