After an Idaho adoption, use the entered order and the records office's specific evidence requirements to plan each update. For an Idaho birth record, the currently posted instructions call for a written request, identification and a certified adoption report. A new certificate is a separate product of that records process, not something every office produces immediately after the hearing.
Use Idaho's adoption instructions
Idaho's birth-record change page links the adoption instructions and application, revised January 2026.
| Requirement | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Written request | A signed request to process the adoption. |
| Identification | The requesting person's identification, following the application's approved-ID instructions. |
| Court-certified report | The Idaho Court Certification of Adoption for an Idaho adoption, or the appropriate certified report from the other adopting state. |
| Record information | The child's name, birth details, parents' information, your relationship and return-contact details. |
| Certificate order | The requested copies and the fees for the legal action and certificate. |
The adoption instructions say to obtain the Idaho Court Certification of Adoption form from the office and have the court clerk certify it. If the adoption occurred in another U.S. state, they call for that state's certified report or certificate of adoption. Ask which route applies instead of assuming an unverified photocopy of the decree is sufficient.
Check fees and request handling
The posted January 2026 packet lists $20 for filing the adoption amendment and $16 for each certified certificate, so the legal action plus one copy totals $36 before optional services. These are records-office charges. They do not describe the court's filing fee or our preparation fee.
The packet says the bureau has no public counter and provides its mail instructions. Follow the current official packet for the address, payment and identification requirements. Keep a copy of your signed request and note when it was sent.
Distinguish amendments from ordinary copy orders
The adoption-specific page says legal actions are processed in the order received and may take several weeks, depending on volume. The attached application also describes ordinary and rush processing. Ask the bureau for the current estimate for your legal action; do not treat a routine certificate-order estimate as a guaranteed adoption-amendment completion time.
If the birth record belongs to another state, start with that birth jurisdiction's requirements. The Idaho instructions also describe a separate foreign-birth route for qualifying Idaho adoptions; this guide does not treat that route as a U.S.-citizenship determination.
Keep other recipients moving appropriately
Check insurance enrollment or correction deadlines promptly. Ask SSA, the school and medical-record offices what they need for the requested changes; they may have different evidence and timing rules. Review the legal name against the entered order, and use the national records checklist below for the federal questions.
The records planner gives you a place to track the court report, legal-action request, certificate order and each other update.
