Any adult may adopt another adult who is 18 to 21 and consents, or who is a current or former stepchild, niece, nephew, cousin or grandchild of the adopter. The adult adoptee must consent. If the adopter is married and not legally separated, the adopter's spouse must also consent, as long as that spouse is able to. The same rule applies to the adoptee's spouse. The natural parents do not have to consent. You file in the Superior Court in the county where either of you lives, with a written adoption agreement. A hearing is required, and both of you appear in person.
