How much does stepparent adoption cost in Texas?

Texas stepparent-adoption costs depend on the filing county, the required parental-rights work, any evaluation or records review, and other case-specific services. Our standard preparation price is $349 for the first adoptee, with $99 per additional adoptee in the same case. Court charges are separate. Obtain an itemized county quote rather than treating a statewide estimate as your final bill.

Understand the Harris County example

The Harris County District Clerk's 2026 schedule distinguishes adult adoption from minor adoption or adoption with termination. The minor entry is $365 and expressly lists excluded charges. The adult entry is $350; do not substitute it for a child's case.

For one child's minor-adoption case, $349 preparation plus $365 filing plus the listed $15 and $2 charges is $731 before issuance, service, evaluation and other applicable expenses. Confirm the current itemized amount with the clerk. This example is neither a Texas-wide fee nor an all-inclusive price.

Agreement may reduce disputed work, but it does not automatically remove the filing charge or every parental-rights requirement. Texas Family Code Chapter 162 addresses the conditions for adopting a child. Do not assume that a parent's informal agreement substitutes for the required legal procedure.

For an uncontested stepparent case, §107.153 permits the court to waive an adoption evaluation after the specified review of department investigative records and criminal-history information. The waiver is discretionary, and the section assigns evaluation or records-review costs to the prospective adoptive parent. “Uncontested” therefore does not mean that every related expense disappears.

Obtain quotes before committing to optional work

Ask the clerk which filing category and court apply, what process must be issued and how required service is completed. Ask about the applicable inability-to-pay procedure if court charges are unaffordable. Approval and the scope of relief depend on the actual process; our service charge is separate.

Get a written quote for any evaluator, process server or attorney. Specify whether the quote includes filing, travel, copies and final record requests. For a dispute, use the representation guide to identify the legal help needed.

Track the complete budget

Keep a checklist of preparation, filing, additional-child court charges, issuance, service, records review or evaluation, legal work and post-decree records. Mark confirmed amounts and retain receipts. Avoid treating a preparation-plus-filing subtotal as a ceiling on your family's expenses.

Read the payment-arrangements guide before assuming an installment option, and the Terms of Service for the court-acceptance guarantee's conditions. A document package does not guarantee an adoption order.

Follow the correct filing path

Use the Texas filing roadmap, then start the Texas questionnaire. An adult case has a separate Texas adult-cost guide. For another jurisdiction, consult its distinct California or Alaska budget.
