How do I get a copy of the adoption order in Iowa?

In Iowa, you get a copy of your adoption order from the clerk of the District Court in the county where the adoption was finalized. You can ask for certified copies right after the finalization hearing, and you can request more from the same clerk later if you need them.

At the hearing:

  • The judge signs the Order of Adoption at finalization.
  • Ask the court clerk for certified copies before you leave, or ask how to request them.
  • The clerk can tell you whether copies are handed over the same day or sent to you, and how long that takes.

How many copies to request: Ask for more than one certified copy. You may be asked for the order when you update your child's records, and it is easier to have extras than to go back to the court. The clerk can tell you the fee per certified copy, since the amount is set locally and can change.

If you need a copy later:

  • Contact the District Court clerk in the county where the adoption was finalized.
  • Have the child's name, the case number, and the approximate date of finalization ready.
  • Ask the clerk what the copy or certification fee is and how they accept requests (in person, by mail, or another way).

Where you will likely use the order:

  • Birth certificate: Contact Iowa Department of Public Health Vital Records about getting your child's birth certificate updated after the adoption. They can tell you what they require and what it costs.
  • Health insurance: Your insurer or employer may ask for the order when you add your child as a dependent.
  • School and other records: Schools, doctors, and other agencies may want to see the order to update names or parent information.
  • Safekeeping: Keep at least one certified copy with your other important family documents.

Timing: Your copies are not available until the adoption is final. In Iowa, the period from filing to finalization is 180 days, and stepparent adoptions typically take 3-6 months overall. Plan to request your certified copies at or right after the finalization hearing, not before.

If something looks wrong on the order: If you spot a misspelled name or a wrong date, contact the District Court clerk right away. The clerk can explain what steps apply to your case. If the problem is more complicated, an Iowa attorney can advise you on your specific situation.

Cost to keep in mind: Filing fees for the adoption itself typically run $150-$250, and the total cost of a stepparent adoption in Iowa is typically under $1,000 when you file on your own, compared with $3,000-$5,000+ with an attorney. Certified copy fees are separate, and the clerk can confirm them.
