After the finalization hearing, the District Court produces the signed Order of Adoption. Here is how to get copies:

At the hearing:

  • The judge signs the Order of Adoption during the hearing
  • Ask the court clerk for certified copies right after the hearing
  • Some courts provide copies the same day; others mail them within 1–2 weeks

How many copies to request:

  • We recommend 3–5 certified copies — you will need them for:

- Minnesota Office of Vital Records (to request new birth certificate)

- Health insurance enrollment (qualifying life event)

- School records update

- Passport application

- Your personal records

Cost per certified copy: Typically $5–$25 per copy

If you need copies later:

  • Contact the clerk of the District Court where the adoption was finalized
  • Provide the case number and date of finalization
  • Pay the copying/certification fee
  • Copies are usually available within a few business days

What to do with the adoption order:

  1. Send to Minnesota Office of Vital Records for a new birth certificate
  2. Provide to your insurance company to add the child as a dependent
  3. Provide to the child's school to update records
  4. Use for passport application
  5. Store safely with other important family documents

We include detailed post-adoption instructions in your document package ($349).
