What is the difference between stepparent adoption and regular adoption?

• You're already living with and parenting the child

• No adoption agency involved
• Shorter timeline (3–6 months vs. 1–2 years)
• Lower cost ($349 + court fees vs. $20,000–$50,000+)
• One biological parent retains custody (your spouse)
• Only the other bio parent's rights are terminated

Traditional/Agency Adoption:

• Complete home study required (multiple visits over months)
• Adoption agency facilitates placement
• Much longer timeline (often 1–2+ years)
• Much higher cost ($20,000–$50,000+)
• Both biological parents' rights terminated
• Child placed with entirely new family

Stepparent adoption is the most common form of adoption in the United States because the family already exists — the law is simply catching up to reality.
