What is the adult adoption process in Nevada?

Nevada adult adoption requires a written adoption agreement and the District Court's approval. Confirm the ten-year age difference, the correct parties and applicable spouse agreements; prepare the petition's required information; then follow the court's notice and hearing directions. The current adult-adoption provisions are NRS 127C.700–127C.720 following the 2025 renumbering.

Confirm the age difference and roles

NRS 127C.700 requires the adoptee to be at least ten years younger than the adopter and excludes adopting one's own spouse. Use the Nevada eligibility guide before preparing documents. If you mean for your stepparent to become your legal parent, your stepparent is the adopter.

Both parties execute a written agreement assuming the legal parent-child relationship. The agreement and the court's order have different functions; signing the agreement is not finalization.

Make the petition's choices explicit

Section 127C.720 identifies the parties' names and ages, their desire to establish the relationship, any proposed new name, whether an amended birth certificate is desired, and the request to add an additional parent or replace a specified parent on that record. It also requires a statement of compliance with the law.

Check the actual records and ask for help with a missing document or uncertain legal statement. Do not guess which parent is being replaced or assume a name change happens automatically.

File with the correct court and follow directions

The adult provisions allow filing in the District Court of the county where either party resides. Confirm local documents, submission method, current charges and copies with that court. Our standard preparation price is $349 for the first adoptee; court and provider charges remain separate. Confirm the scope and displayed price for any additional documents or separate cases.

Section 127C.090 also addresses other adoption provisions that apply where consistent with the adult provisions. Follow the actual court requirements rather than assuming that the three adult sections mean no inquiry or supporting papers can ever be requested.

Separate spouse agreements from notice

Section 127C.710 addresses both parties' spouses on the stated marriage, separation and capacity terms. Natural-parent agreement is not required, but §127C.720 permits court-ordered notice to interested people and allows them to appear and object. Use the consent-and-notice guide and retain required delivery proof.

Obtain the actual hearing or waiver decision

The court sets a hearing unless it waives the hearing at the petitioners' request. Both parties ordinarily appear; counsel with written authority may appear when attendance is impossible or impractical. The statute provides for examination in person or remotely. Confirm the approved arrangement instead of assuming every court automatically waives a hearing or accepts a particular remote format.

Track the accepted filing, notice, requested corrections, hearing or waiver order and final decision. The statute does not promise a universal four-to-eight-week finish. Read the Terms of Service for the document guarantee's conditions; preparation does not guarantee court approval.

Keep the order and finish the record requests

Obtain the signed order and follow the records agency's separate instructions for any approved changes. The direction guide helps clarify who becomes whose parent. Use the representation guide for legal questions, or start the Nevada adult questionnaire with the actual circumstances.
