What is a home study for stepparent adoption?

A home study for stepparent adoption is much simpler than what most people imagine.

What it IS:

• A brief interview with a social worker (usually at your home)
• Basic check that the home is safe for children
• Review of your family situation
• Typically takes 1–2 hours

What it is NOT:

• An invasive inspection of your home
• A white-glove cleanliness test
• An interrogation
• A reason to be anxious

About half of states waive the home study for stepparent adoption — since you're already living with and parenting the child, the court recognizes it's different from placing a child with strangers.

Cost: $300–$400 average ($600 in California)

Timeline: Usually scheduled within 2–4 weeks and completed in one visit
