How long does adult adoption take in California?

California adult adoption is completed when the court approves the agreement and enters the adoption order. A useful schedule follows the actual filing, hearing and records steps. Confirm the filing court’s available hearing dates and any additional steps before relying on a completion estimate.

Build the schedule around four checkpoints

CheckpointWhat you need to confirm
Ready to fileThe agreement, petition, applicable consents and proposed order are complete and consistent.
FiledThe clerk has accepted the packet and explained the next scheduling step.
HearingYou know the date, attendance instructions and any additional information the court requests.
Order and recordsThe signed order is available, and you know which records updates you still need to request.

California Courts' adult-adoption guide describes filing and then having a hearing date set when the documents are properly signed and filed. Preparing documents, filing them, obtaining a hearing and receiving an updated certificate are separate tasks.

Ask the filing court precise questions

Before making travel or celebration plans, ask the court how adult-adoption hearings are scheduled. Ask whether the clerk sets a date after filing or whether you must request it, what the current availability is, and how you will receive confirmation. Use your case number for follow-up after filing.

Sonoma County's currently linked packet illustrates that a county can have its own filing and scheduling instructions. Its coversheet is dated 2013. Confirm today's instructions with the court rather than treating an old packet's contact details as a current statewide scheduling rule.

Leave room for requests and corrections

Missing signatures, an inconsistent name, a required consent issue or a request for more information may need to be resolved before the court can decide the case. The state court guide says an investigation is not routinely required, but the judge can request one. That possibility makes an unconditional no-investigation or guaranteed-hearing-date promise unreliable.

Keep a short log with the filing date, the person or office contacted, the next task and the date you will follow up. If a hearing is continued, ask for the new instructions and note them in the log. Do not assume a questionnaire confirmation is a court filing receipt.

Keep the hearing and records calendars separate

After approval, obtain the signed order and arrange certified copies according to the recipients' requirements. Birth-certificate, Social Security or other record changes can require their own submissions. Use the after-adoption records planner to track those tasks without describing the adoption as unfinished merely because an agency update is still pending.
