How do I get a copy of the adoption order in New York?
New YorkAfter the finalization hearing, the Family Court or Surrogate's Court produces the signed Order of Adoption. Here is how to get copies:
At the hearing:
- The judge signs the Order of Adoption during the hearing
- Ask the court clerk for certified copies right after the hearing
- Some courts provide copies the same day; others mail them within 1–2 weeks
How many copies to request:
- We recommend 3–5 certified copies — you will need them for:
- New York State Department of Health Vital Records (to request new birth certificate)
- Health insurance enrollment (qualifying life event)
- School records update
- Passport application
- Your personal records
