What should I wear to the adoption hearing in New Hampshire?
New HampshireDress as you would for an important family event — respectful but not overly formal. The finalization hearing in Circuit Court is a celebration, not a trial.
Recommended attire:
- Business casual is perfect — slacks and a nice shirt or blouse
- A suit or dress is fine but not required
- Clean and neat is the standard
- Some families wear matching outfits or "adoption day" t-shirts under nice clothes
What NOT to wear:
- Very casual clothing (shorts, flip-flops, tank tops)
- Clothing with offensive graphics or language
- Hats (remove in the courtroom)
For the child:
- Something nice but comfortable — they should feel good, not stiff
- Many families buy a special outfit for the occasion
- Some children wear "adopted" or "I got adopted!" shirts
What to bring:
- Photo ID for you and your spouse
- A copy of your filed documents (we provide these)
- A camera or phone for photos (ask the judge's permission first — most say yes)
- Family members — most judges welcome them
- Tissues — this is an emotional moment!
The hearing typically lasts 15–30 minutes. Most New Hampshire judges are warm, congratulatory, and genuinely happy for your family. Many take photos from the bench.
