What happens at the stepparent adoption hearing in Connecticut?

Connecticut

The finalization hearing in Connecticut Probate Court is usually the best part of the entire process — and it's much less intimidating than families expect.

What typically happens:

1. The judge reviews all filed documents

2. The judge asks the adopting stepparent a few questions (Do you want to adopt this child? Do you understand the responsibilities?)

3. If the child is 12+, the judge may speak with them briefly to confirm consent

4. The judge signs the Order of Adoption

5. Your family is officially and legally complete!

The hearing typically lasts 15–30 minutes. Many Connecticut judges are warm and congratulatory — some take photos with the family. Some courts now offer virtual hearings.

Families often describe this as one of the most emotional and meaningful days of their lives. Many bring family members to celebrate.
