How soon after adoption can I update my child's documents in Delaware?

You can start updating documents immediately after the finalization hearing — as soon as you have the signed adoption order from the Family Court.

Update timeline:

Same day or within days:

• [ ] Request certified copies of the adoption order from the court clerk
• [ ] Notify your health insurance (qualifying life event — 30–60 day window)
• [ ] Contact the child's school with the adoption order
• [ ] Update your employer benefits (add child as dependent)

Within 1–2 weeks:

• [ ] Submit adoption order to Delaware Office of Vital Statistics for a new birth certificate (takes 4–8 weeks to arrive)
• [ ] Update medical providers with new legal parent information
• [ ] Update Social Security records at your local office
• [ ] Contact your life insurance company

Within 1–2 months:

• [ ] Apply for a new passport (once new birth certificate arrives)
