How do I explain adoption to my stepchild in Connecticut?

Age-appropriate honesty is the best approach. Here is what has worked for the 34,000+ families we have helped:

Ages 2–4: Keep it simple

• "[Stepparent name] is going to be your [mommy/daddy] for real!"
• "We're going to see a judge who will make our family official"
• "It means we're a forever family"

Ages 5–8: Add more detail

• "Right now, [stepparent] is your step[mom/dad]. After adoption, they will be your legal [mom/dad]"
• "The judge will sign a paper that says [stepparent] is your parent"
• "You might get a new last name if you want one"
• "Nothing changes about how much we love you — this just makes it official"

Ages 9–12: Include the practical

• Explain what "legal parent" means — medical decisions, school, insurance
• "[Stepparent] will be able to do everything a parent can do"
• If they ask about the biological parent: "This is about adding someone to your life, not removing anyone"

Ages 12+: Full transparency (consent required in Connecticut)

• Explain the legal implications honestly
• Discuss the name change option
• Address their concerns about the biological parent
• Explain that their consent is required and respected

What NOT to say:

• Do not speak negatively about the biological parent
• Do not force excitement — let emotions be natural
• Do not minimize the significance — this IS a big deal
